Shanghai Houtan Park: Landscape as a Living System
A regenerative living landscape on Shanghai's Huangpu riverfront, the park was built on a brownfield former industrial site. "The park's constructed wetland, ecological flood control, reclaimed industrial structures and materials, and urban agriculture are integral components of an overall restorative design strategy to treat polluted river water and recover the degraded waterfront in an aesthetically pleasing way." Project brings Bryant Park indoors
Last year's project to bring the greenery of Bryant Park indoors at One Bryant Park's Bank of America Tower has been enjoyed by many. Four leafy-green monoliths ranging from 7-25 feet tall now stand in the street-level atrium of the tower. Dubbed the Urban Garden Room, the installation was designed by Wallace Roberts & Todd headed by designer Margie Ruddick and sculptor Dorothy Ruddick. The team's goal was an immersive installation of living green sculptures. More

The University of Rhode Island's annual Landscape Architecture Lecture Series continues Oct. 7 at 7pm with a lecture by Jeffrey Hyland, principal of Ironwood Design Group, who will discuss "The Importance of Team: How the Green Movement Has Changed the Playing Field." More
ARC International Wildlife Crossing Design Competition: Finalists Announced
Five finalist teams have been selected to develop conceptual designs for a wildlife overpass at West Vail Pass along Interstate Highway 70 near Vail, Colorado. The designs are intended to usher in a new generation of wildlife crossing infrastructure using new methods, new materials, and new thinking to reduce structural costs and increase adaptability and ecological function.
The 5 finalists are: -Balmori Associates (New York) -Janet Rosenberg & Associates (Toronto) -Michael Van Valkenburgh & Associates with HNTB (New York) -The Olin Studio (Philadelphia) -Zwarts & Jantsma (Amsterdam)
These were chosen from 36 team submissions from nine countries, representing over 100 firms worldwide - the caliber of submissions was very high. The five teams include more than a dozen firms from four countries with the landscape architects, engineers, and architects unique to each team, supported by ecologists, wildlife biologists and other specialists.
MVVA Team Moves Forward in City+Arch+River 2015 Competition
Landscape architect Michael Van Valkenburgh and a multidisciplinary team introduced as experts in "urban renewal, preservation, commemoration, social connections and ecological restoration" have been picked for the planning phase of The City+The Arch+The River 2015 International Design Competition. Call For Nominations for the 2011 IFLA Sir Geoffrey Jellicoe Award
This award is the highest honour that the International Federation of Landscape Architects can bestow upon a landscape architect. The Award recognizes a living landscape architect whose lifetime achievements and contributions have had a unique and lasting impact on the welfare of society and the environmnet and on the promotion of the profession of landscape architecture. Nominations are due November 10, and the award will be announced at the annual IFLA World Congress. More
